How to become an electrician, step by step
The path from apprentice to journeyman to master electrician is the same in every state — what differs is the hours, the exam, and the AHJ. ClarkTE training covers NEC, electrical theory, conduit, controls, and license exam prep on a schedule that fits a full-time job.
The three stages of the electrician career path
Apprentice electrician. Most states require 8,000 hours (about four years) of supervised on-the-job training plus 576–800 hours of related classroom instruction. Apprentices work under the direct supervision of a journeyman or master, learning the trade by installing the work they read about in the NEC.
Journeyman electrician. After completing the apprenticeship and passing the journeyman exam (NEC, theory, calculations, and state-specific code amendments), you can install electrical work without direct supervision. Most states require continuing education hours each renewal cycle to stay current.
Master electrician. Two to four additional years as a journeyman, then a master’s exam. Masters can pull permits, run their own shops, and supervise journeymen and apprentices. The exam is heavy on calculations, business law, and the chapters of the NEC most journeymen never touch (Chapter 5 special occupancies, Chapter 6 special equipment).

Apprentice Electrician
